BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/bcr-2015209425 DESCRIPTION A 65-year-old non-smoker and former worker of the Hindustan Composites Asbestos factory, Mumbai, was screened at the Occupational Health and Safety Centre, Mumbai, which has helped diagnose and compensate occupational diseases including asbestosis since 1988. He had 28 years of exposure to asbestos as a worker in the textileplating department, a dusty section of the factory. He was asymptomatic and had no relevant clinical signs. His chest X-ray showed evidence of asbestosis: ILO (International Labour Organization) grading s/s; 1/0 (figure 1). Nine months later, he developed dyspnoea and a repeat X-ray (figure 2) and a positron emission tomography (PET)-CT (figure 3) showed evidence of lung cancer in the hilar region of the left lung infiltrating into the left bronchus and the

Application of MCNP4C Monte Carlo code in radiation dosimetry in heterogeneous phantom
Background: In treating patients with radiation, the degree of accuracy for the delivery of tumor dose is recommended to be within ± 5% by ICRU in report 24. The experimental studies have shown that the presence of low-density inhomogeneity in areas such as the lung can lead to a greater than 30% change in the water dose data. Therefore, inhomogeneity corrections should be used in treatment pla...
متن کاملAsbestos-related cancer risk in patients with asbestosis or pleural plaques.
INTRODUCTION The relationships between benign asbestos-related diseases (asbestosis and pleural plaques) and thoracic cancers are still debated. The aim of this paper was to review the epidemiological data relevant to this issue. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE Published studies show a significant relationship between occupational exposure to asbestos and lung cancer risk, even in the absence of abnormalit...
متن کاملCarboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen in ELF: elevation in asbestosis, but not in pleural plaque disease.
Markers of collagen metabolism may possibly be used in the assessment of pulmonary involvement in asbestosis-related pulmonary diseases. In this study the levels of the carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP) and the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) were evaluated in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), epithelial lining fluid (ELF) and serum from patien...
متن کاملHigh resolution pulmonary computed tomography scans quantified by analysis of density distribution: application to asbestosis.
A new method for quantitative evaluation for high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the lungs was developed by assessment of the distribution of radiological densities within the lung slices. To enable effective reduction of data and improve the sensitivity of detection of abnormalities, the density distributions were analysed by curve fitting through the gamma variate model. The output ...
متن کاملHuman disease consequences of fiber exposures: a review of human lung pathology and fiber burden data.
Inhalation of asbestos fibers results in a variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases of the respiratory tract. Some of these diseases, such as asbestosis, generally occur after prolonged and intensive exposure to asbestos, whereas others, such as pleural mesothelioma, may occur following brief exposures. Inhalation of nonasbestiform mineral fibers can occur as well, and these fibers can ...
